Local churches come together to provide ashes-to-go for Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the start of the Lenten season.

Three pastors from several churches in South Mississippi came together in Long Beach to provide ashes-to-go for those on the move.

Cars rolled up to the Jim Simpson Memorial Fishing Pier this morning. Drivers were greeted with prayer and received ashes across their foreheads.

The ashes symbolize the dust from God creating his people.

Lent is a 40-day period of fasting and abstinence, a time for Christians to focus on repenting their sins. Grace Lutheran Church Pastor Dave Parr said, “We are back out here on the beach sharing the good news that God loves us. Also reminding us that because it is Ash Wednesday that we are about to enter into a 40-day season of lent, a time of reflection, self-examination, and repentance.”

Ash Wednesday is always six weeks before Easter. This year, Easter falls on April 22nd.
