Local activists: ending DACA will destroy families
Local activists are taking a strong stand against Trump’s decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
Members of Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance tell News 25 phasing out DACA will destroy families living in our community and across the nation. The Trump administration announced the cut of the program today. DACA protected nearly 800,000 immigrants brought to the United States as children from deportation.
Local activists say those who have received protections and started families and careers in our community will suffer from Trump’s decision. Melinda Medina with Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance said, “They are our service men and women. Some of them serve as nurses, doctors, as police officers, these are people within our community that contribute back to our society. You are telling them that it doesn’t matter how long they’ve been here, whether they were raised in our school system or not, that they don’t belong and that’s wrong.”
Those protected by the program will be able to renew their permits if their status expires in the next six months, according to Trump’s announcement.
