Local 13-year-old musical prodigy plays every instrument in debut song
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WXXV) — A local 13-year-old musical prodigy with big dreams is releasing his own songs and performing across the coast. We sat down with Lennon Gainey at the Lady May in Ocean Springs to learn more about his journey in music.
Gainey may be just 13 years old, but he’s already making his mark in music. He recently released his debut song, “Endless Mirrors,” performing every instrument on the track himself. Gainey describes his style as southern blues rock.
“I was at the Mary O’Keefe that’s not far from Lady May, and I was in a dressing room back stage, and just spent 40 minutes just not thinking of what to write about, and I saw these two mirrors in the dressing room facing each other, and they looked endless. In the song I just kinda described what they looked like,” said Gainey. “My goal was… I think it sounds a little psychedelic, but the music is not psychedelic. The music is kinda bluesy rock.”
Gainey has been playing at restaurants and venues across the Coast for the last few years, both solo and with his band “The Lennon Gainey Project.” He says he’s inspired by many famous guitarists, and hopes one day he’s lucky enough to end up in the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame.
“To kind of be in the same passion as some of the idols that I play… Allen Collins, Jerry Garcia, David Gilmour, Eric Clapton,” Gainey said. “Everybody has like side hobbies in their life, but I think this will be the main thing in [my] future.”
He says he’s excited to have finally released a song that his friends and fans can listen to on streaming platforms, but most of all, he’s grateful for his parents’ support on this journey.
“My dad definitely got me into the music, and my mom has helped me out a lot with buying equipment that’s worthy for a show like tonight,” he said. “I am looking forward to more music, and it’s cool to just have it on a playlist on Spotify. That’s a bunch of kids’ dream for that.”
Gainey hopes to keep releasing music and playing at local venues across the coast.
