Lighting of the Sails at the Mississippi Aquarium

The Mississippi Aquarium is getting into the carnival spirit with a colorful display of purple, gold, and green.

Royalty from the Gulf Coast Carnival Association joined aquarium leaders this evening to light up their iconic sails in Mardi Gras colors. Since opening, the aquarium has lit up the sails during holiday seasons like Christmas.

Aquarium CEO Kurt Allen and King D’Iberville Johnny Atherton say these sails and colors hold symbolic meaning. Allen said, “Now that Mardi Gras season is here, we really wanted to showcase a little bit of Mardi Gras, because this really is a different kind of year for us.”

Atherton said, “Purple represents justice, green represents faith, and gold represents power, so it’s nice to showcase that with the three sails that they have.”

The Aquarium will hold other carnival-themed events leading up to Mardi Gras Day including a royal court of animals and a mask contest.
