Lieutenant Governor Reeves Visiting Coast for Briefing on Bonnet Carre Spillway Issue

Some of the state’s top political leaders are stepping up and into the fold as South Mississippi continues to grapple with the adverse effects of the recent openings of the Bonnet Carre Spillway in Louisiana

Today, Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves will be on the Coast and will get a briefing on this issue at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport. After the briefing, he will issue a statement to the media on the matter.

We have continually brought you stories, as local marine life experts, area fishermen, environmentalists, businesses, and residents voice their concerns and experiences in the spillover effect from the twice opened Bonnet Carre Spillway this year, pointing to the mass numbers of dead dolphins and sea turtles that have washed ashore this year in record numbers and the negative effects it’s had on our environment, tourism, and business.

In addition, the Harrison County Board of Supervisors has written a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expressing the board’s displeasure with the recent opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway and asking for the county to be a part of the discussion and to have input in officials’ decision to open the spillways. As of now, no Mississippi officials are included in this decision.
