Learn to Kayak with Pascagoula Parks & Recreation

Pascagoula Parks & Recreation will be offering three kayaking classes during the month of September.

"QuickStart Your Kayak" will provide a basic introduction to paddling a kayak, safety, and simple rescues. A minimal skill set will be presented and practiced. The fee for Quickstart is $35 plus a $5 registration fee for a four hour class. Classes will be offered on September 6th and 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lighthouse Park.

"Rescues Clinic for Kayaking" will present students with techniques for wet exits, partner rescues, and self rescues in the comfort of a pool. The fee for this clinic will be $20 plus a $5 registration fee for the two-hour class. Classes will be offered September 5th, 10th, 18th, and 25th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Andrew Johnson Center located at 1402 Tucker Avenue.

"SmartStart Paddling for Kayaks" will provide basic information on kayaking and what you should know before going kayaking. The fee for this course is $10 plus a $5 registration fee for a 1 hour class. Classes will be offered September 2nd, 8th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Scranton Nature Center located at 3928 Nathan Hale Avenue.

These courses are American Canoe Association sanctioned courses held by ACA certified instructor, Kristi Ducote. Kristi holds a Level I instructor certification in Introduction to Kayaking, Level II instructor certification in Essentials of Kayak Touring, and Coastal Kayaking Day Trip Leader certification.

Participants must provide their own equipment (kayak, paddle, and life jacket) for on-water classes. They must also satisfy the following essential eligibility criteria:

*Be at least 16 years of age

*Be able to independently participate in all individual skills and activities listed in the course outline while also maintaining an appropriate and safe body position

*Be able to hold their breath under water, and while in the water wearing a properly fitted life jacket be able to independently turn from a face down to a face up position keeping their head above water

*Be able to effectively communicate with the instructor and other course participants

*Be able to manage all personal care independently, or with the assistance of a companion

*Be able to manage all personal mobility independently, or with the assistance of a companion
