Lawsuit settled over excessive force accusations by former St. Martin Middle School teacher

A former Mississippi special education teacher and the district where she worked have settled a lawsuit over accusations the teacher used excessive force on a disabled student riding a school bus.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the student’s guardians, accused former St. Martin Middle School teacher Kerri Ann Nettles of using excessive force and discrimination on the then-14-year-old under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The suit relates to a 2014 report that Nettles screamed at the student and put a rag in the girl’s mouth to quiet her down on the bus.

The terms of the settlement are confidential because the student is a minor. Nettles separately pleaded no contest to misdemeanor abuse charges and paid a $3,000 fine.
