Our Lady of Fatima holds ‘Turkey Trot’ fun run for students

Students at Our Lady of Fatima Elementary chased the turkey today at their inaugural Turkey Trot.

The Turkey Trot is a one mile run where students chased their running club coach, also known as the turkey.

OLF’s Running Club had planned on participating in the mayor’s cup but plans changed because of COVID. The Turkey Trot was a way for students to still participate in a race safely.

The race was set up cross country style and parents cheered on their children as they tried catching the turkey on their way to the finish line.  Parent and Running Club Coach Jason Weaver said, “Coach approached me about a month ago and I thought it would be a great idea getting the kids out and fit and exercising. Getting them away from screens and TVs and come out here where it is beautiful and let the sun and wind hit you.”

P.E. Coach Finely Hewes said, “Our student body is roughly 200 and we have about 92 kids in the running club that come out every Tuesday. They just ran a mile. They’ll be running a mile today. It’s a pretty neat thing.”

Hewes was astonished by the amount of overwhelming interest in the running from students and parents and this won’t be the last Turkey Trot.
