Laboring Away on Labor Day

Everyone loves taking it easy on Labor Day, right? Maybe not. Today many local businesses opened their doors and News 25’s Hank Davis spoke with employees about what it’s like to labor away on Labor Day.
Labor Day: for some it’s a day to stay at home and spend some quality time with the family, but for others it’s just another day at work. Labor Day Weekend can be one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year, but sometimes working on holiday has its perks. Guess Gulfport store manager Kelly Powe said, “You get to meet a lot of different people and find out what they’re looking for and shopping for. It’s really good to work during busy holidays and stuff like that because you get to meet people from other areas.”
If you love what you do, coming to work on a holiday is no big deal. Toni Adkins-Riepl feels that during holiday breaks, some people actually use her place of employment as an escape. “I don’t think it’s a bad thing to work on Labor Day, especially in a bookstore, because any day in a book store is a good day. People are coming in, maybe to take respite from their family and coming into the store wanting to know what the latest book is or who has an album out and we’re able to share that knowledge.”
It’s not just retail that stays open on Labor Day, local hot spot Taco Sombrero makes it a point to keep their doors open for customers looking to get their grub on whenever hunger strikes. Lynn Parkhill with Taco Sombrero said, “I’ve never had a Labor Day off. I’ve always worked them. The only days we close are Fourth of July, Christmas and Thanksgiving. We’re here to serve the public so we need to be here when they need us so that’s what we do for a living.”
