Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle recovering after surgery

The female Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle operated on yesterday at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies is on the mend.

An internal medicine specialist from MSU made a special trip to South Mississippi to join forces with local marine life experts to identify just where a hook was embedded in the female turtle, who belongs to an endangered species of sea turtles.

Thanks to a gastroendoscope purchased with grant money, they were able to locate and successfully removed the embedded hook and the sea turtle appears to be doing just fine.

Once she is fully rehabilitated, IMMS workers will release her back into the Mississippi Sound, hopefully to reproduce.
