Keesler Federal Credit Union to hold Community Shred Day in Gulfport on Saturday, July 18

Identity protection is more important than ever, and Keesler Federal Credit Union is providing an opportunity for Mississippi Gulf Coast residents to securely shred personal documents and prevent key information from falling into the wrong hands.

Keesler Federal will hold a community Shred Day at its Gulfport branch located at 13083 Seaway Road on Saturday, July 18. The event is free to the public, and each person may bring up to five bags of sensitive documents, which the credit union will shred under controlled supervision.

The event starts at 9 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m.

Identity theft tops the list of complaints to the Federal Trade Commission by consumers nationwide. According to a study conducted last year (2019) criminals are becoming more adept at getting past authentication processes. To avoid allowing sensitive information falling into the wrong hands, consumers should consider shredding such documents as old tax documents, bank and investment statements, canceled checks and old pay stubs.

Criminals often steal a person’s social security number or financial information to file a fake income tax return, make fraudulent purchases, open utility or wireless accounts, assume or open a banking account, obtain a loan or lease, or receive illegal government benefits.

The Shred Day in Gulfport is one of four Keesler Federal is sponsoring in 2020.
