The wife of Senator Thad Cochran, Kay Cochran, watched proudly as her initials were welded onto a keel plate of a United States Coast Guard ship at Ingalls.
Senator Cochran stood next to his wife who is sponsoring Kimball, Ingalls’ seventh U.S. Coast Guard national security cutter. The ship will be launched in December 2016 and delivered in the first quarter of 2018.
Kay Cochran tells News 25 she could not be more proud of her involvement with Kimball and Ingalls Shipyard. “I’m so excited. I was so honored. It’s just the thrill of a lifetime. I do realize the people here have put their heart and soul into building this ship and they could not have a more proud sponsor than I am.”
The ship is named in honor of Sumner Kimball who organized and directed the U.S. Life Saving Service which later became the U.S. Coast Guard.
