Katrina anniversary and Harvey prayer memorial

It was an emotional remembrance of Hurricane Katrina plus a prayer of hope and faith for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
That was the mission of this morning’s gathering at the Ground Zero Hurricane Museum in Waveland. Hancock County first responders, elected officials, and residents opened their hearts to the victims of the historic flooding in Texas, but also reminisced about the devastation from Katrina which destroyed the Mississippi Gulf Coast 12 years ago.
Waveland Mayor Mike Smith tells News 25 what he recalls as assistant fire chief during the hurricane. “The day after Katrina when we were able to get back home and everything that we had, everything I owned was full of mud and swept through the house. We received nine feet of water in my personal house so I know how that feels.”
A wreath was placed at the memorial site of the Waveland residents who lost their lives 12 years ago during Hurricane Katrina.
