Jury finds Hattiesburg man guilty of carjacking

A Hattiesburg man has been found guilty of carjacking and attempted leaving the scene of an accident. The incident happened in April 2016.

Shawn Moffett reportedly took a trip to the Coast and forced the driver of the vehicle to pull over into a parking lot off of Highway 49.

A bystander called 911 after witnessing Moffett attacking his sister. Moffett broke through a window to get out of the car, ran across Highway 49 toward a Volkswagen Passat. He climbed into the car through the sunroof then took off on Highway 49 traveling between 83 to 87 miles per hour.

Moffett ran the red light at the intersection of Highway 49 and O’Neal Road causing an accident.

Gulfport officers captured Moffett near the scene of the crash where he was attempting to enter another parked car.

At sentencing, it was noted that Moffett was only out of prison for two days when he committed this crime. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
