Joe Piernas Sr. Announces Intention to Run for State Senate

Democrat, Joseph Piernas Sr., announced he will be running for the District 48 Mississippi State Senate seat this year.

Monday, News 25 sat down with Piernas, a Pass Christian native, to talk about his campaign for the year. Piernas has held leadership positions as a Pass Christian alderman for three terms and as Mayor pro tem for his second and third terms. He plans to focus on education, including pre-k funding, safety initiatives for police and first responders, affordable insurance, and infrastructure.

Piernas says, “My champion causes would be what my constituents want me to take to Jackson and represent for them. Of course we’re going to be balancing the budget, funding education, looking at and making sure our roads are safe for the people to travel, but I also want to know what are the needs of the constituents, the business leaders of District 48, and the Gulf Coast as a whole.”

District 48 includes most of Pass Christian, Long Beach, and Gulfport. Deborah Dawkins, a Democrat, currently holds the seat. Dawkins has not yet announced whether or not she will run again.
