Jay Ladner hits home run recruiting class: USM gets three of top 40 junior college transfers
If there’s anyone with the first-hand experience necessary to bring Southern Miss men’s basketball back to the big stage, it would be someone from the 1987 NIT Championship team.
As it turns out, the Golden Eagles just so happen to have one of those champions as a head coach.
It’s all coming full circle for Jay Ladner in his return to USM where he’s ready to lead the Black and Gold for a second season.
The first go-round had its fair share of ups and downs resulting in an overall record of 9-22 with just one road win.
But that was before the arrival of Coach Ladner’s first recruiting class coming off a full spring which includes three of the nation’s top 40 junior college prospects.
Now it’s time to mix the new with the old and turn expectations on paper into reality on paper. “Our goal and vision at Southern Miss, and we’ve said this from day one and we tell our players this every day is to return Southern Miss to national prominence in men’s basketball, and I think that so far this group does that – on paper. Again, a lot happens between now and the start of the season and how they come in and kind of buy in to what we want and expect every day. I know this, everybody can’t be a winner.”
Overall Coach Ladner is bringing in seven new faces from the spring class of 2020.
