Jackson County Wood Fire Update

Ocean Springs and St. Martin residents are still dealing with lingering smoke today after last night’s brush fire.
Frank Duke, assistant chief of the Northwest Fire Department, says the fire was contained last night and has been completely put out. But early this morning and throughout the day, the area remained clouded by a thick layer of smoke.
One St. Martin resident says it was impossible to see across the road from his house last night but today the smoke is less evident. Bill Lyons said, “This morning, it was a little lingering smell, a little hazy to it. Other than that, it’s cleared out pretty much today. Maybe the wind went the other way but the wind has died down. It’s not going to kick up that old, smothering wood and stuff. It’s pretty good now.”
The Mississippi Forestry Commission continues to investigate just what started the fire in the first place.
