Jackson County Supervisor Melton Harris has died

Jackson County District 2 County Supervisor Melton Harris has died this morning at the age of 75.

Harris had served on the board since 2008 and was in his fourth term representing Moss Point and parts of Pascagoula while also serving as the board’s president at the time of his death.

Originally a native of Grenada County and graduate of Tougaloo College, Harris served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era, earning an honorable discharge and later retired from the Chevron Refinery in 1999.

He is survived by his wife Portia and three children Donise, Marcus, and Melani.

Jackson County District One Supervisor Barry Cumbest shared some memorable stories about Harris and great times they shared together. “If it was concerning the county, he was always busy so to speak. He always did what he thought was best for Jackson County and the people he worked with. He loved his family and he loved to hunt. When you get him off in hunting stories you better be ready to sit down and listen to him for a little while.”

According to the Jackson County government, the cause of death has not been confirmed at this time.
