Jackson Co. Board Extends SRHS Agreement 90 Days

Monday, the Jackson County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to extend an agreement with Singing River Health System (S.R.H.S.) The extension prevents termination of the health system’s retirement plan for another 90 days.

Gail Smith was employed with S.R.H.S. for 25 years, and is one of many demanding answers. Smith says, "They’ve stolen our money, but yet those people that signed off on that are still in office, and you can’t say, ‘Oops, I didn’t know.’ And if you’re a C.E.O. and you didn’t know, you don’t need to be in office."

Monday, the Jackson County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously for a 90 day extension to an agreement with the hospital that prevents termination of the health system’s retirement plan during that time. This compromise comes after the supervisors rejected a 60 day extension proposal from S.R.H.S. and requested 120 days. Melton Harris, Jackson County Supervisor for District 2, says, "We hope that we can proceed with this in an expeditious manner that maybe it will not take 90 days. If the information can be shared with Bill Guice in a timely manner, giving him and his team an opportunity to review the information and come back to us with a recommendation."

Tuesday, Harris, along with other supervisors and retirees will be headed to Jackson to encourage legislators to support the effort for transparency statewide. Smith also says, "And it’s all about accountability, and the legislators are those people who are placed in office to protect us. They don’t have us in mind, and those aren’t the people that should be in office representing us." Harris closes, "We’re not sure how successful we are going to be with that effort, but at least we’re going to try."

Officials from S.R.H.S. made a statement saying they are glad the supervisors voted to the 90 day agreement, as it is time to move forward, completing this process.
