Investigation of Disability Education

The U.S. Department of Education is investigating a Mississippi woman’s complaint that the state department mishandled an investigation into the education of her disabled child.
Parent Lori Roy tells news outlets a Jackson County school changed her 13-year-old son’s individualized education plan without her knowledge. She says the school stopped agreed upon counseling and that her son has an emotional disability that causes extreme stress. She complained to the Mississippi Department of Education which found no evidence of wrongdoing so she escalated it.
The federal investigation ended in a hearing on Friday, though Roy is still waiting on the results. Spokeswoman for the MDE Jean Cook says the department does not comment on issues under investigation.
