Instagram to test out hiding its “like” feature
Will removing the “like” feature on your social media apps make it a safer place for more conversation? One social media giant intends to find out.
Instagram says it’s going to hide its “like” feature on its U.S. apps starting next week.
The social media platform says it wants to see if doing so returns conversations to a more “safe” and healthy atmosphere.
Instagram says it’s been hiding like counts in countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, Ireland, Italy and Brazil.
Social media researchers say when users tailor their content to whatever is engaged or “liked” the most, the social environment of conversation becomes more “radicalized” and less “safe.”
Some users say this will make it harder to determine what follower count is legitimate.
