Inmate at South Mississippi Correctional Institution dies
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – An inmate from South Mississippi Correctional Institution has died.
The state Department of Corrections says 61-year-old Timothy W. Walters was pronounced dead Tuesday at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg.
He was serving a life sentence after pleading guilty on Aug. 30, 1993, to rape and sexual assault in Jones County.
At least 11 Mississippi inmates have died this year. At least 106 died from late 2019 until the end of 2020.
The U.S. Justice Department announced in February 2020 that it is investigating the Mississippi prison system.
