Inmate dies at George County jail due to complications of COVID-19

GEORGE COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV) — Early Saturday morning, a Mississippi Department of Corrections inmate housed in the George County Regional Correctional Facility, died at George Regional Hospital due to complications from COVID-19.

The 48-year-old inmate was admitted to the hospital this past Wednesday after complaining of chest pains and was later moved to the facility’s COVID wing. The inmate passed away shortly after 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 8th.

In a statement Sunday night, the George County Sheriff’s Office said, “Sheriff Havard would like to reassure the public that all possible steps are being taken to care for those who are ill and to mitigate the further spread of the virus, including deep cleaning of all frequently touched surfaces, such as light switches, door knobs, hand rails, workstations, and countertops. Sheriff Havard remains dedicated to providing the best possible care for the employees and inmates in his jurisdiction with the help of the George Regional Hospital System.”
