Initiative 55 Deadline is Saturday
It looks like removing the Confederate battle emblem from the Mississippi state flag is not something residents will vote on in the coming years.
Saturday is the deadline for gathering signatures on Initiative 55, the measure that seeks to place changing the flag on the 2018 ballot.
However, petitions with verified signatures or registered voters must be submitted today because the Secretary of State’s Office will be closed over the weekend. As of yet, no paperwork has been submitted.
The petition drive started in response to the June 2015 shooting of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
Mississippi is the only state to still fly a flag with the Confederate battle emblem.
