Increasing Fees For Politicians
A bill that would raise the qualifying fees to run for political office is headed to Governor Phil Bryant’s desk.
If approved, the new law would require independent candidates to start paying qualifying fees and increase the fees party candidates already pay.
Candidates for governor would now pay a doubled fee of $1,000 dollars.
Candidates for state senator and state representative would pay $250 dollars a fee that currently sits at just $15 dollars.
Supporters say the bill would raise money for election operations.
The governor now has the power to either approve or veto it.
