HSSM offers adoption deal for senior pets

The month of November is senior pet awareness month and a local animal shelter is helping its older pets find a home.

The Humane Society of South Mississippi held a special day for its senior pets, aged five and older, by waiving the adoption fee on these animals.

Adopters had to pay only a tag fee of $8 to welcome a new pet into their homes.

“It’s a lot harder for some of these senior dogs to be here because many of them have been loved family pets,” said Lisa Peterson, adoption and transportation manager for HSSM. “So this is a completely different environment for them. A senior pet can be great for someone because many times they’re already house trained. They already walk well on a leash for people who are working they’re not going to have to deal with the potty train. It’s really helpful.”

Volunteers and locals were able to walk some of the shelter dogs to burn off some calories ahead of Thanksgiving week for the Humane Society’s Turkey Trot for Tails event.
