House Fire in Long Beach

A woman and her son are now safe after their home in Long Beach caught fire just after 3 o’clock this afternoon.
The Harrison County and Long Beach fire departments both responded to a call about a house fire near the intersection of 28th Street and Bell Circle. The fire started in a closet in the middle bedroom of the home.Residents of the home, Phyllis and Gilbert Hover, were both home, in separate rooms, at the time the fire started. Both were able to escape the house without any injuries. The interior of the home suffered severe smoke and heat damage.
William Faulk, with the Harrison County Fire Department, said, “It’s always safer to have smoke alarms. At night, smoke will not even wake you up. You will sleep right through a fire. During the day, like this, they were both in other rooms. So the fire broke out in that room, started to push out into the other hallway before they even noticed it was burning.”
Officials were able to put out the fire within minutes. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
