Hope Academy student taken into custody after Gulfport police find knife and gun in backpack

A fifth grade student at Hope Academy was taken into custody Monday after a gun and knife was discovered in the student’s backpack.

Reportedly, the student told classmates that he had a gun and the students then reported it to the teacher.

After staff searched the backpack, they found an unloaded firearm. Gulfport Police Department took the child into custody and removed the gun.

Upon further inspection, officers found a knife in the backpack as well.

A statement sent to parents by the head of Hope Academy Heather Blenden states: “We believe this was an isolated case and that no individual student or staff member was in immediate danger.”

The head of the school says that the offending student will not return to Hope Academy’s campus at any point in the future.
