Hometown Heroes Day: Military send off in Pascagoula

Saturday, the Mississippi Army National Guard 859th Vertical Engineer Company out of Pascagoula will be deployed to the Middle East to fight for our country.

As a way to thank them for their service a hometown sendoff is being planned and the City of Pascagoula is asking for your help. As the soldiers drive down the causeway in Pascagoula, they are asking for supporters to come out and line the highway. You can bring flags to wave, streamers, anything to show support.

A marine himself, Mayor Dane Maxwell has declared Saturday ‘Hometown Hero Day’ as part of the sendoff.

Most of the 160 members deployed are from the Coast or surrounding areas so hometown hero takes on a bigger meaning. Pascagoula Director of Community Relations Lauri-Ellen Smith said, “Just safely get onto the shoulder of the highway, watch your children carefully. Giving the public an opportunity to get engaged in this sendoff and make the men and women of this company know they are loved and appreciated.”

On Saturday, the company will be traveling down the westbound lane of Highway 90. If you plan on being a part of the sendoff they ask you to be in place by 8:30 a.m.
