Homeowner catches suspect during burglary attempt at Harrison County home

A Harrison County homeowner caught a man allegedly trying to steal a car part and held him for deputies.

Sheriff Troy Peterson said John Thomas Cearley, 50, of Long Beach, was charged with one count of possession of burglary tools and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

About 12:53 a.m. Monday morning, deputies responded to a call in Gulfport about a theft. When deputies arrived, they found the homeowner holding a suspect at gunpoint. The suspect was identified as Cearley.

The homeowner told deputies he caught Cearley under the car, trying to cut the catalytic converter off the vehicle. Deputies noted that the converter was partially cut off, along with burglary tools found in Cearley’s possession when he was caught.

Deputies found and searched Cearley’s car, which led to the discovery of a controlled substance, heroin, and more burglary tools.

Cearley was taken to the Harrison County jail and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond set by Justice Judge Brandon Ladner.
