Highway 49 expansion on hold

A project to expand a popular South Mississippi roadway is on standby due to funding issues.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation looked into increasing the capacity of Highway 49 from O’Neal Road north to Harrison Central High School. MDOT purchased right-of-way and moved a lot of facilities several years ago to make way for the expansion.
The project is now on hold until more funding is available. Kelly Castleberry with MDOT said, “And the cost of materials has gone up over 400 percent since our 87 Highway Bill that was passed. Just based on that, we’re having to use a lot of the money for roadway surface treatment, what motorist drive on, bridge replacements that need to be done for bridges that are well over 50 to 75 years old.”
Officials estimate the project could cost around several million dollars.
