High School Girls Soccer: Ocean Springs vs. Brandon

On their way to winning the 2019 6A girls soccer state championship, the Ocean Springs Lady Greyhounds had to go through Brandon in the second round.

Last year, the Lady Bulldogs got their revenge in the second round, setting the stage for a 2021 rematch except this time in the first round.

Not your typical playoff opener, 14-0 Ocean Springs hosting 12-3-5 Brandon felt more like a state championship game.

Heartbreak for Ocean Springs, hadn’t lost a game coming in only to have the dream season end in a 2-2 result, 5-3 in penalty kicks. Ocean Springs Head Girls Soccer Neil Scott said, “Yeah, that’s about as tough as it gets. They’re a good team, we’re a good team. I think on another day, we’re the better team more often. But they were the team that scored when they needed to score tonight, and that’s about as tough of a first-round playoff matchup as I can think of. Shaking hands with the coach at the game, the first thing he said to me was this was more like a state championship, and I agree with him. I mean if we’re not the top two teams in the state, we’re in the top three or four right there in the first round of the 6A playoffs. So that’s a really tough matchup, and it’s a really tough loss for us.”

Ocean Springs ends its season with an overall record of 14-1.
