High School Football Preview: Picayune vs. Wayne County

And a game of the week in its own right, perhaps the game of the season for Picayune in a winner-take-all regular season finale for the region 4 class 5A championship.

The undefeated Maroon Tide is going head-to-head with Wayne County in a battle of 6-0 district records.

A seemingly equal match-up on paper, but keep in mind, Gulfport and East Central are the only two teams to have kept it within three touchdowns of Picayune so far this season.

Yet somehow, the Tide still has to prove it one more time on the road against the War Eagles.

A challenge of humility right before the start of the playoffs despite a perfect 10-0 record and an average margin of victory of more than 41 points per game.

Picayune Running Back Cameron Thomas said, “It’s really do or die at the end of the season, so we’ve got to come out with a bang.”

Picayune Head Football Coach Dodd Lee said, “That’s what you play for. We’re looking forward to it. All I want us to do is keep a humble heart and keep trying to improve and keep trying to get better as a team because it is true that if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse.”

Picayune Offensive Lineman Timothy Mickle said, “They’re going to be a pretty good challenge for us. But I think if we bring the intensity first play and we come off and we show them what they’re going to have to deal with the rest of the night, I think we’ve got them.”

Picayune Offensive Lineman Deonta Reed said, “To be district champions is to show how hard you worked in the summer and during the season. And to just know that this area I’m in, I want it.”

Picayune Elijah Jenkins said, “Absolutely, business trip. Handling our business. Doing what we have to do to come back home and focus to the next week going to the playoffs. And just making sure we’re handling our business. Don’t let up on nobody. No sympathy. And just. Bang.”

The Tide will hit the road for tomorrow’s 7 p.m. kick-off from Wayne County.
