Heavy Rain Causes Accident with 18 Wheeler on I-10

Monday, there were lots of traffic accidents related to the wet weather. Amongst the accidents was an 18 wheeler that slid off the road on Interstate 10 near the Highway 609 exit in Jackson County.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the driver of the truck slammed on his breaks when he came upon some slow moving traffic. The wet roads caused the 18 wheeler to jack knife and a tow truck had to pull it out of the mud. The accident happened just after noon Monday and tied up traffic in the eastbound lanes for more than an hour. The driver said it’s something he’ll never forget.

Inicio Oliveira, the truck driver, says, “Very wet, rain, everybody stopped. I, no stopped because my truck is empty.”

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the agency has responded to nine accidents in south Mississippi, some with injuries. A spokesperson for the Highway Patrol says that’s well above average and attributes the accidents to the wet roads and the holiday traffic.
