‘Have a Heart Month’ at the Humane Society of South Mississippi

Today is the first day of February which means Valentine’s Day is two weeks away and what better way to share the love than to give back.

This Valentine’s Day, you don’t have to be alone. The Humane Society of South Mississippi is full of adoptable companions.  Humane Society Community Outreach Manager Valerie Kattz said, “Buddy is six-years-old. He is a lab German shepherd mix. He is super friendly. We say he is a social butterfly.”

As perfect as Buddy may seem on the outside, he is having trouble getting adopted because he is heartworm positive. “Sadly, our heartworm positive dogs tend to stay at the shelter longer because a lot of potential adopters are afraid of the financial burden that can come along with adopting one of those heartworm positive dogs,” said Kattz.

At the Humane Society of South Mississippi, it’s ‘Have a Heart Month’ which means you can save the lives of dogs just like Buddy. “What we are doing is raising funds to help our heartworm positive dogs like Buddy so they can receive their treatment.”

About 40 percent of dogs in Mississippi are heartworm positive. This condition can be deadly if left untreated, but donating money to the shelter is easy and fun this month. “You can bring your pets in for pictures. We have a kissing booth where you can put your pet in it and takes pictures or you can get some kisses from our shelter pets. If you want to come in and have some really cute Valentine’s Day photos you can do all of that for only $20 for a drop-in fee or you can pay $40 for a full session.”

The money made from the photo shoots will go towards treatment for the heartworm positive dogs at the shelter.
