HB 1523 Taking Effect Tomorrow
House Bill 1523 officially goes into effect tomorrow.
Signed by Governor Phil Bryant, the Religious Freedom Bill has stirred up a lot of criticism from the LGBTQ community, claiming the bill makes it legal to discriminate against their human rights.
Tomorrow, it will be legal for public employees, businesses and social workers to deny services based on the belief that “marriage is strictly between a man and a woman.”
Bethany Fayard, a member of the LGBTQ community and volunteer with the Human Rights Campaign, tells News 25 she’s not worried about the law taking effect tomorrow, just disappointed it was ever passed in the first place. “Even before it was passed, I think all of the activists like myself and even the legislature that voted this law in knew that it would never stick. A lot of people say ‘well, what about tomorrow? It’s the first.’ Well, it’s really not that big of a deal tomorrow. This law that is going in effect tomorrow has already had some of the bulk stripped down.”
