Hazardous material caught fire on barge in Pass Christian Harbor

Local crews kept a bad situation from turning worse today as they battled flames on a barge in the Mississippi Sound.
According to Gulfport Battalion Chief Greg Griffin, around 1:15 today Coast Guard officials contacted the Gulfport Fire Department for back up on a barge fire. Battalion Chief Griffin says the barge was carrying anhydrous ammonia on it and if it caught fire it could have been deadly.
Crews, including DMR, Gulfport fire, and the Coast Guard, were able to stop the fire before it reached the area containing the chemicals.
Battalion Chief Griffin says personnel was on the barge during the time of the fire, but they were able to get on a tugboat pushing the barge injury free. No chemicals were released into the air.
