Harrison County Tax Collector Runoff Election

Voters are headed to the polls for a runoff special election to decide who Harrison County’s next tax collector will be.

Interim Tax Collector Sharon Nash Barnett and District Five Supervisor Connie Rockco were the top two vote getters out of a field of five candidates in the November 3rd general election.

Official returns show that Barnett led all candidates in the first round of voting with 27,667 votes while Rockco was in second place with 19,398, allowing them to advance to today’s runoff.

Despite the closeness of the race, election officials at the Lyman Community Center in Gulfport say voter turnout for the runoff is low at the center. Receiving and Returning Manager Donna Shaw said, “For some reason, when it is a runoff people just don’t come out to vote. It’s kind of sad that they don’t want to come the second time to vote on something because you need to put your voice into who you want in office. Every election is important.”

The polls are open until 7 p.m. tonight.
