Harmful Algae Bloom on its Way Out?

The 40 and 50 degree temperatures we’ve seen here on the Coast over the past weekend are sending the harmful algae bloom out for good.
Melissa Scallan with the Department of Marine Resources tells News 25 that crews tested shoreline waters over the weekend. The results came back with zero percent toxicity. Because of rough waters, they did not test further out over the weekend. With the sunshine today, they were able to test deeper into the sound.
Scallan says they’re hoping those tests will be negative for the bloom as well. The results are set to be in tomorrow. “We did some testing near the shore and those were zero count. However, the counts have typically been higher further out, so we’re doing some sampling today and we will know tomorrow what those counts are as far as the toxicity levels.”
News 25 will keep you posted on the results tomorrow. MDEQ and the DMR hope the waters will be returned to normal.
