Hanukkah Menorah Lighting

Christmas is still days away but Hanukkah is in full swing.
Tonight at Edgewater Mall, the Jewish community gathered to celebrate the fifth day of Hanukkah by lighting the fifth candle on the largest menorah in Mississippi. Guests also enjoyed traditional Hanukkah treats and Jewish music. Children could make crafts and have their face painted. Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich was the guest speaker.
Rabbi Akiva Hall tells News 25, unlike what many people think, Hanukkah is not the Jewish Christmas. “We celebrate victory in ancient times from Greek oppression. It’s a time to celebrate being Jewish and Jewish pride and a message for the whole world is even in a dark, negative situation, positivity and light can always shine through. So, we’re coming together as a community tonight to be able to celebrate together.”
Hall also says he hopes tonight’s celebration will reconnect Jews with Hanukkah. The Jewish holiday started on Sunday and will last until Monday evening.
