Hang out with exotic animals in South Mississippi
It’s not every day you get the chance to see animals from different continents in South Mississippi, but you now have the opportunity.
Take a 20 minute drive north of Gulfport to McHenry and you might think you’re on the other side of the planet. Cody Breland’s Wild Acres isn’t your typical South Mississippi farm. “I had reptiles growing up so I just kind of graduated to larger things I guess.”
Those larger animals range from a zebra named Jabari to a kangaroo named JoJo.
At Wild Acres, over five continents are represented in the barn, including a kodamundi which is native to Central and South America. You have the chance to hold him and take pictures with him. “I am a photographer and with these animals I saw an opportunity. There’s a lot of people that don’t get the chance to see these animals, so to actually have people bring out their children, they take pictures with the zebra, or they take pictures with anything and everything here they want to take pictures with. I think it’s a really cool experience and those are memories most don’t get to make, much less have forever.”
Those photoshoots create life long memories and keep the kids from wanting to leave. “There’s nothing more rewarding than having a family come out here and just seeing their kids light up and literally not want to leave.”
Wild Acres is fairly new, still in its first year, but a photoshoot isn’t the only way to hang out with the animals. The newest experience is Wild Acres Paint Safari. Jake Fletcher will be leading the class and tells News 25 it’s a twist on the already popular paint and wine. “So instead of your traditional canvas we actually are going on wooden planks. What I’m doing is staining them, we’ll distress them at the class and then we’ll paint a picture and this is what we’re going to be painting.”
The Paint Safari is Saturday, February 9th at Wild Acres starting at 2 p.m. If you’d like to attend tickets are $40 and can be purchased on Eventbrite or through email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
