Gulfport schools start new school year on a good note

All students are officially back to school in South Mississippi as Gulfport students headed back for their first day this morning.

The smell of art supplies and the sound of music filled the halls of Pass Road Elementary School as teachers and students welcomed in the new school year. Pass Road Elementary Principal Simone Fairley said, “Everybody’s excited. Summer is a great break, but getting back to school, into the routine of things, makes me feel great and the students love it too.”

Teacher’s assistant Lauren Richardson said, “It’s just fun to see how they react to meeting new people and new classmates and people they haven’t seen before.”

Students in Mrs. Rush’s class had something to sing about on their first day. While Principal Fairley says students will be learning lots of new things and trying their hand at an array of different classroom activities, Pass Road Elementary is also raising the bar when it comes to entertainment. Music teacher Diane Rush is already coaching the choir for several shows this year. “I’m always trying to do bigger and better things. Each grade level does a show and Pass Road Elementary has a choir that has already been booked for a very exciting booking coming up. They’ve been invited to sing the National Anthem for the Harlem Globetrotters in Biloxi in December.”

Mrs. Rush says music is a fundamental part of a child’s development and she plans to have the children sing more with the live piano instead of with the recorded music this school year. “It’s amazing the research you can read. If you teach them music and they can sing and follow a beat, it transfers into everything they do. It helps their math skills, their language skills, and every subject they take, besides the fact that it exposes them to the arts and is just plain old fun. “

Mrs. Rush carries as much enthusiasm to the classroom as her students, grateful the district offers full music programs and support for the arts.
