Gulfport police investigating homicide

Gulfport police are investigating a homicide that left one man dead. Police responded to the home to find 55-year-old Eric Harris dead from a gunshot wound. He is the fifth homicide victim in Gulfport since February 1st.

“He was always a loving, kind, and gentle person. He never bothered nobody. He likes to always go and clean up someone’s yard or something like that.” This is how Carolyn Scott describes her cousin, 55-year-old Eric Harris who was found dead Friday morning. Family members tried repeatedly to get in touch with Harris for two days before his body was discovered. Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said, “Upon arrival, officers found one deceased male, looked like he suffered injuries from gunfire.”

Harris had been living in a shed in the backyard of a home on 26th Street, made by the owner of the home to help him get on his feet. Shayna Russell, who also lives in the home, told News 25 that he was a nice person who never caused any issues. However, it was just recently that Scott discovered he was starting to get caught up with the wrong crowd. “I was like ‘Eric, I know something is wrong with you,’ I said, but I’ll sort of keep it to myself because I knew what he was doing, but I didn’t know that he would get that far behind the situation that he was doing around people.”

Police were not able to confirm if they found drugs on the scene, but Scott tells News 25 that her cousin was involved with marijuana and crack-cocaine. Gulfport police responded to a similar incident at this same location in January 2018 when Harris was shot in the leg.

If anyone has any information on this crime they’re asked to contact the Gulfport Police Department at 228-898-5959.
