Gulfport Police Charge Man with Kidnapping and Attempted Rape
On February 14, 2016, the Gulfport Police Department arrested 39 year old Maurice Vernado Pugh, of Laurel, MS, on the charges of Kidnapping, Attempted Rape, Resisting Arrest by Flight, and Possession of Marijuana.
The arrest was the result of a patrol response to a kidnapping. On February 14, 2016, at approximately 3:00 a.m., a patrol officer was alerted to a kidnapping in progress in the area of 26th Avenue and 29th Street. It was learned that an adult female victim and her cousin left the BluEnvy night club enroute to their vehicle. While walking, the victim was grabbed around the neck by the suspect, dragged off the roadway. At that time, the suspect attempted to rape the victim. The victim’s cousin alerted a police officer who was patrolling the area. Upon observing the police officer, the suspect released the victim and fled the area on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was arrested and identified as Pugh. Upon being arrested, Pugh was in possession of an undisclosed amount of marijuana. He was then transported to the Gulfport Police Department.
After booking and other procedures, Pugh was transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility to be held in lieu of a $200,000.00 bond set by Harrison County Justice Court Judge Brandon Ladner. Pugh was also held with no bond on a violation of probation warrant through the MS Department of Corrections.
