Gulfport native embraces game week as Ole Miss head coach
Ole Miss Interim Football Coach Matt Luke is no stranger to game day at the Vaught, having spent 15 years in Oxford, including his time as a player, but Saturday’s home opener will be different than all the rest.
Now, head coach of the Rebels, Luke will be leading his team into battle for the first time versus South Alabama. This marks his first game at the helm after replacing Hugh Freeze in July.
From day one, Luke made no secret about this being his dream job and he’s still not holding back the emotions of his first time leading the Rebels through the Grove, among other game day traditions. “I’m excited about locking the Vaught, excited about representing my university and trying to put a team on the field that everybody is proud of. But I’m very, very excited, and that’s one of my biggest challenges in this game is trying to control my emotions, and to be a very, very efficient and organized head coach and not let my emotions get to me. I think that’s going to be one of my biggest challenges, but I’m excited and prepared for it.”
The Rebels and Jaguars will get things rolling at 6:30 p.m. from Vaught Hemingway Stadium Saturday. The game will be aired on ESPNU.
