Gulfport Music Festival focuses on safety measures

The Las Vegas attack at a music festival Sunday was the deadliest mass shooting in United States history. With the Gulfport Music Festival starting Friday, organizers say extra security will be on hand to make sure concertgoers stay safe.
Fifty-eight people are dead and 527 people were injured, the world is still in shock after the mass shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas Sunday, a concert where people were having fun turned deadly.“Everyone is on alert right now as we all should be at any time.”
The Gulfport Music Festival is set for Friday and Saturday. As staff set up in Jones Park Wednesday, Gulfport authorities were taking steps toward protecting the public. Sgt. Josh Bromen with Gulfport PD said, “We’re going to have some security measures in place with Swetman Security as well as with Alpha Media so we’re looking forward to the weekend.”
Friday will be the first time in a couple years that the Gulfport Music Festival returns to the Gulf Coast. Radio station 107.1 the Monkey has been preparing for the two-day festival all year. James Steel with 107.1 the Monkey, said “We have a lot of people on the ground, a lot of partners on the ground over there at Jones Park and all over the area getting ready for the artists to come to town and getting ready for the Gulf Coast to celebrate.”
Starting Friday with performances by Sister Hazel and Three Doors Down, the lineup for Gulfport Music Festival features a variety of music Saturday with Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, House of Pain, and Grammy award winning artists Ludacris and Shaggy. “You got a little bit of a mix between the old, the new, the now, and what festival can you go to where two days is just $45,” said Steel.
A couple of things that won’t be allowed inside the festival are outside beverages, including bottles or cans, and backpacks and purses. With all the people coming, they want to make sure that safety is kept number one. A full list of items to leave at home can be found on the festival’s website. “Definitely safety is a first priority for us. We want everyone to go and have a good time and be safe.”
