Gulfport Lady Admirals vying for back-to-back 6A titles
Having graduated only three seniors from last year’s state championship roster, the Gulfport girls soccer team came into this season as a heavy favorite to go back-to-back.
The Lady Admirals are just one win away from delivering on all their potential, now less than 48 hours from appearing in the 6A title game for the fifth time in school history.
Gulfport has two gold balls to show for it and a third would complete the program’s best two-year run ever.
After posting a mark of 21-0-4 last season, the Lady Admirals are now 21-1-2 on the year, having outscored their playoff competition, 11-1 through three games.
But after beating Oak Grove in overtime in Tuesday’s South State thriller, Head Coach Chris Pryor remains humble with the same approach his team has taken all year long. “This team hasn’t won anything. We didn’t win a state championship. This team has to earn everything that we get. So, we won our district, competitive, make sure we move forward. And then it was just about hey, how far can we go in the playoffs? Let’s win the first game. Now let’s win the second. Let’s see if we can put a good game against Oak Grove. But now that we’re back in the state championship, of course, we’re trying to make some school history. This will be a third state championship if we can get it, but I know Madison Central, they’re going to be prepared, they’re going to be mentally strong, too. But I really feel like we can definitely go up there and make a show of it and hopefully bring something back down to the Coast.”
Madison Central comes in with an overall record of 11-3-2.
