Gulfport Fire Department seeks accredited status

The Gulfport Fire Department is beginning the process of obtaining accredited status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt says the performance-based credentialing is a higher standard of credentialing than what other agencies provide.

As of right now, there is only one fire department in Mississippi that is accredited by the CFAI.

Gulfport Fire is still in the pre-applicant phase. However, they hope to move into the full applicant phase in the next month-and-a-half.

As a part of that process, Gulfport Fire is updating their strategic plan to ensure that the services they provide are meeting the needs of the community. Chief Beyerstedt said, “This is a win-win for the fire department and the citizens of our community. And it helps foster their input into their department and the services provided. And it also helps us evaluate the things that we’re doing and making sure that we’re doing them in a world class manner.”

The fire department is asking for residents help in this process by asking them to fill out a survey about the services they provide.

A link to the survey can be found on Gulfport Fire Department’s and the City of Gulfport’s Facebook pages. All responses will remain anonymous.
