Gulfport city council calls special meeting to discuss new Sportsplex

Tonight a special city council meeting was called to discuss a new Sportsplex as well as expansions to the existing complex in Gulfport.
The new proposed 250 acre Sportsplex will be located south of Interstate 10 with a focus on soccer.
The proposal passed with a vote of 6 to 1. This project is expected to cost around $15 million. The north expansions, which include road construction will be $18 million.
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes says, “We have had a lot of folks ask you know we need a better soccer facility and we need greater baseball facilities and so we think and an auditorium has been discussed as well so there are a lot of options and opportunities for or citizens, residents and visitors to come and have more tax dollars come our way and showcase the coast better.”
Rusty Walker the City Council President says, “We think it is what the community has asked us to do and that is to continue developing the sports tourism market and giving opportunities for local kids to play. But it also keeping that family centric you know family fun event.”
It will be sent to the state legislature for them to pass on whether it will be put to a vote by Gulfport citizens. City council members as well as the mayor brought up this proposal because of the demand they say they have seen for it with their citizens.
