Gulfport boy found dead in swimming pool
Investigators are trying to find out what led to the death of a 13-year-old boy whose body was found in an apartment pool Sunday.
“He does know how to swim. That’s the one thing that’s getting the whole family is how he did not get out of that pool.” Questions remain after the death of 13-year-old Ashton Cole whose body was found in a gated apartment pool in Gulfport Sunday night. Ernest Cole says his nephew went for a ride on his bicycle and never returned. “Right when it started getting dark, we started searching the neighborhood.”
A resident living at the Quarters Apartment complex found Ashton’s bike, shirt, and shoes near the pool and called police around 7 p.m. “That’s when the lieutenants and the coroner came out and told us what happened.”
The apartment complex is several blocks from Ashton’s home. Gulfport police tell News 25 it appears Ashton stopped for a swim and accidentally drowned. The family describes Ashton as an outgoing child who was always kind and outspoken. “He was the light of life. I mean, he was one of the reasons we woke up in the morning. We took care of him. To have this happen, it’s tragic. It’s tragic.”
The body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy and the investigation remains open. Anyone with information is asked to call the Gulfport Police Department.
Though Ashton’s life was cut short, he will be remembered in the hearts of his family. “He never had a bad word to say about anybody and was always there for you if you needed him.”
